| Meeting point | Meeting address for Founder's Plaza at the west entrance to Balboa Park is approximate. If 698 El Prado does not appear on your map or app, use Sefton Plaza. Once there, look for three male statues on the only sloped corner at Balboa Dr & El Prado. If driving, allow extra time to find parking and pay via kiosk or the Park Smarter app (license-plate based). We recommend a minimum of three hours of parking. If parking along Balboa Dr & El Prado you can park all day for $10. Ride share drivers sometimes try to drop off at the wrong statue - double-check your drop-off location before arrival. |

Your tour begins at the Founder’s Statues on the west side of the park – and right from the start, you will understand why the decision to set aside this land back in 1868 was one of the best this city ever made.
Next we will stop at the California Tower, built for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition. Its facade depicts the early history of the city and remains a beloved landmark today.
Then we will head to Alcazar Garden, inspired by the gardens of the same name in Spain. Used for both the 1915 and 1935 expositions, the garden offered fair-goers a welcome respite from the crowds and excitement. It provides a picturesque foreground to photos of the California Tower – come prepared with a charged phone.
From there we will visit the Old Globe Theater – one of the most respected regional theaters in the country, a Tony Award winner, and a San Diego institution that has welcomed audiences since 1935.
We will then walk through the heart of the Prado, taking in the unique building facades that line one of the park’s most beautiful stretches.
Next is the Botanical Building, one of the park’s most iconic landmarks – an impressive wooden lath structure that has been drawing visitors since the 1915 Exposition. The adjacent lily pond, full of koi, makes more than a pretty picture. You will learn how the pond played an important role in the war effort during WWI and how it helped injured sailors and soldiers recover during WWII.
The Spanish Village Art Center follows, where artists work in open studios – and where we will stop for a well-earned drink at Daniel’s Coffee Cart, one of our favorite local spots in the park.
Our final stop is Zoro Gardens – a sunken garden that was once a nudist colony during the 1935 California Pacific International Exposition. Today it is a butterfly sanctuary containing everything butterflies need to complete their life cycle. From there we will stroll back down the Prado to the Plaza de Panama.
